looks like I've been wrong and spreading misinformation about the disproven "triune brain theory".

The final—and most important—problem with this mistaken view is the implication that anatomical evolution proceeds in the same fashion as geological strata, with new layers added over existing ones. Instead, much evolutionary change consists of transforming existing parts.

    - From https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0963721420917687#con1

I have definitely made this mistake, many many times.

I'm not sure yet the implications of recognizing instead that "all vertebrates possess the same basic brain regions, here divided into the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain;" in some ways it seems like a nuance, but in other ways I think it'll shift how I see things and talk about things.

more quotes in case you don't read the article:

neural and anatomical complexity evolved repeatedly within many independent lineages

the correct view of evolution is that animals radiated from common ancestors (Fig. 1c). Within these radiations, complex nervous systems and sophisticated cognitive abilities evolved independently many times. For example, cephalopod mollusks, such as octopus and cuttlefish, possess tremendously complex nervous systems and behavior (Mather & Kuba, 2013), and the same is true of some insects and other arthropods (Barron & Klein, 2016; Strausfeld, Hansen, Li, Gomez, & Ito, 1998). Even among nonmammalian vertebrates, brain complexity has increased independently several times, particularly among some sharks, teleost fishes, and birds (Striedter, 1998).

The idea that larger brains can be equated with increased behavioral complexity is highly debatable (Chittka & Niven, 2009).

Public shaming. Yesterday I witnessed a neighbor reprimand their dog - first with words, then physically. The dog yelped. At that point my knee-jerk impulse was to go confront the guy but the fear of conflict / my safety sent me into rationalization / strategizing / calculating outcomes - with the perceived goal of doing what's best for the dog. I didn't do anything.

Shaming the owner was the first thing that came to mind. I rationalized it away but I wish I didn't. I don't know if it would change anything but I don't think it could've made it worse (other than me being big time triggered and having to regulate later). It's quite possible that the owner would at least mildly second-guess their impulse to hit their dog in front of other people's houses should that happen again.

First train the part of you that wants to punish.  Then you can train the dog owner how to influence without punishing.    I love dog training.  It brings me so much clarity cuz I have to be real real tired or worn down to be mad at a dog.  So rarely happens....

How relationships cultivate Who I Want To Be. I have this thing consistently happen in romantic relationships about 10 months in…

I find myself doing a full inventory of if my partner is helping me become who I want to be.

What am I training myself to do in this connection? What beliefs am I supporting or forming in myself through this connection?

I guess I’m often doing this throughout a relationship, but the 10 month mark is where I get the itch to make decisions about if I’ll continue or not.

I’m in this moment with my current partner…appreciating how our relationship is helping me become more open to communicating my feelings honestly, owning my needs as non negotiable (and sometimes uncompromising), push myself to communicate before things are at red alert stage, feel how big and all encompassing love can be, and I see myself as more attractive and smart because of his affirmation. However, I’m definitely learning and practicing some other things that I’m unsure of- sitting with feelings of deep missing for weeks at a time, practicing relying (almost exclusively) on non-romantic connections for support through big changes, and something around extreme letting go of possessiveness of another, which almost reads like a letting go of preferences in my system.

I think those latter things are noble. But I’m wondering…are they noble for me?

I’m reading a book right now that says something about it being somewhat easy to slip into living a life that would be noble but it’s based on someone else’s dream or ideas. And it’s important to connect with your dreams, unique ideas, purpose…

When and how do you tend to take inventory of a relationship? How do your relationships support you?

Also open to what shadows you see in my frame 👀

Yeah! And something about holding the ideals of a gazelle… when I’m there… I turn my nose up at the raccoon. What’s strange is how different social circles or cultural influences or even maybe just my hormonal cycle may make the ideals of the raccoon and the ideals of the gazelle...

I think an ideal for a raccoon is finding a garbage can to eat dinner in. I’ve definitely felt the feeling of holding the ideals of a gazelle but finding out later that I’m actually looking for a trash can…it feels amazing…existential self acceptance....

Some Thoughts on Boundaries. Boundaries are mine. My portals to connection. They’re statements of fact: “whoops, I’m sorry, it turns out I can’t love from here anymore.”

The purest form doesn’t require anyone else to uphold. I can say “no” to a party I don’t want to go to. I can turn off my phone at bedtime. Asking someone not to interrupt me or not answering emails after work can feel a little trickier to uphold, because I have to be willing to walk away.

There are a bunch of socially agreed upon boundaries that are upheld by law enforcement, like cease and desists or restraining orders. It’s often not simple—in Texas I have a right to refuse anyone setting foot on my property (but what about racism, when my property is a business?).

There are some thoughts for now...

    jordanSA•...
also boundaries tend to be the most intimate places. Like when someone touches your skin softly (doesn’t have to be sexual, could be a cat for example) it often feels more intimate than a hard push....
